Dr. Rose’s Remedies – Week 1

I have agreed to test a product called “Dr. Rose’s Remedies” on Dancer because he has had awful rain rot on his hind legs for almost an entire year! I’ve tried everything: sprays, creams, shampoos, wipes… but nothing has helped. When I heard that this product was all natural, I was very interested. I use many organic and “natural” products at home, so why not use them on my horse too?

When I received this product, I was surprised at how small the container was! But, don’t let the size fool you! The consistency of the product is a lot like lip balm. And to further that analogy, I was told by the company to use this product on Dancer as often as I would apply lip balm to my lips. I was slightly skeptical about this statement because I’m a little….how do I put this…addicted…to my Burt’s Bees lip balm! So, I decided that once a day would be a good amount to start with.

After I groomed Dancer and wiped the areas of rain rot with a damp towel, I applied a layer of Dr. Rose’s salve to each leg. The instructions also said to apply “liberally” so i didn’t worry about it being a little goopy. However, I didn’t glop on more than I thought would soak in during the course of a day. I took a “before” photo and a photo showing what the area looked like with the salve applied to it. (Photos are below)

Over the next few days, I saw the areas of rain rot soften and look as if they were starting to heal. The salve is very sticky and doesn’t wash off easily, so I wiped off the area every few days just to get the excess off. Dirt also attaches itself like a magnet to the salve, so it’s important to make sure the area is always clean.

It is a little hard to tell that this salve is working at first, but after sticking with it for a few days, I did see some initial improvement.
