Easy Peasy Tack Cleaning

The word “easy” and cleaning tack normally aren’t used in the same sentence. I realize that. I assure you that I haven’t completely lost my mind. I’ve just discovered a great product that has significantly cut down my tack cleaning time. Tack wipes! I know, not a new concept. But why are so many people against them? I’ve found that a large number of people don’t trust that a single tack wipe could make enough of a difference to even bother with. Many equestrians want to know that their tack is properly cleaned, conditioned and stored away after each cleaning session.

I am all for detailed cleaning and conditioning on a regular basis, but what if you just want to wipe down a dusty saddle after a ride on a windy day? Dust, dirt, sweat, horse slobber…these are all things our saddles come into contact with on a regular basis. But what if you work full time, like moi, and don’t have a ton of horsey time in the evenings? I know I don’t have time to thoroughly clean my saddle after every ride, but it only takes a few minutes to clean & condition my saddle with a handy tack wipe! (And, don’t worry, I do still clean my saddle properly on a regular basis)

Want another easy cleaning tip? After removing your horse’s bridle, dunk the bit in your horse’s water (it’s his slobber anyway, right?!) or use the barn hose to rinse it off. Your horse will thank you and it will keep you from having to scrub it as often as you already do!

The brand of tack wipes I use are called “Tack Wipes“, but there are other versions as well. I hope it makes your trip to the barn a little easier!

Actually, western show saddle maker Dale Chavez from California ONLY uses olive oil. He recommended it to me several years ago. I use it on all my show tack, both Western and English.
