IKEA shelf hack

I recently transferred ownership of my old herd to Hattie. Since then, they’ve been brushed, braided, exercised, and fed. They get ridden regularly and blankets put on in the cold. She’s doing an excellent job taking care of them, but with all of the new additions to her herd, we needed another place to keep them.

When the herd was in my care, they always resided on a few shelves above my desk. I realized we had an empty area in her playroom that could fit some shelves and, after much searching, I decided on the IKEA Pershult shelves. They’re modern and simple and very “hackable”! The closest IKEA store to us is in another state, so I was able to order these online which made things a lot easier. They come in a few different sizes, or you can order the brackets separately and purchase your own wood in any size to customize it even further.

Hattie’s favorite color is purple, so I found a lavender spray paint by Krylon called “Gum Drop” that was the perfect shade for the brackets. Her playroom furniture is all neutral, so wanted a pop of color on the shelves just to make it a bit more fun. I took off all of the stickers on the brackets, cleaned them, laid them all out on some cardboard, and started spraying. It took about two coats on each side to fully cover everything. I waited about 45 minutes between each coat, even though the can says it dries faster.

After letting it cure overnight in the garage, we hung the shelves and gave my old friends a new home. They seem much happier in their own spot and I have to admit, I kind of like having them around again.
