Kicking Horse Coffee

Those who know me are aware of the fact that I’m not just completely obsessed with horses, but I have a growing obsession with coffee. I worked as a barista throughout college and learned all I could about the brewing process, starting with bean selection. So, I was incredibly excited when I saw a new fair trade, organic coffee on my grocery store shelves with a HORSE LOGO! OK, OK, I admit that was my first attraction. I saw the name – Kicking Horse – and the logo and then admired the packaging design and then picked it up to learn more.

I was pleasantly surprised to read that this interesting tin of goodness was created in order to help support and sustain our environment in a lot of ways. The company has started renewable energy initiatives, uses recyclable packaging and supports organizations like the Nature Conservancy. Awesome! But what does it taste like? And what is the best way to brew it?

Before we received this amazing espresso machine from my parents, we preferred to brew our beans using the French press. There are step-by-step instructions HERE if you are new to the process. However, I decided to make myself an authentic iced latte for my taste test.

This one turned out great! I tasted a bit of the shot “plain” before I added it to the milk to get a better feel for the flavor of the beans. Definitely bold, but also very smooth. My husband, also a huge coffee lover, enjoyed it just as much as I did. I’ll definitely check out their other beans when I finish this one. And if your local grocery store doesn’t carry this brand, you can buy it on Amazon!
