Movie Review: Wild Horse, Wild Ride

I’ve been waiting months for this movie to come out. My husband – a movie addict – showed me the preview such a long time ago I had nearly forgotten about it until I saw it on Red Box! You see, I’ve known about the Extreme Mustang Makeover for quite sometime now and have some crazy idea that I might participate someday. I’ve always felt drawn toward mustangs and have dreamed of having my own ranch with 1,000 acres so I can adopt an entire wild herd. OK, so the last one might not be very realistic – at least not right now – but the first one could be feasible. Especially after watching this movie!

It’s a documentary about 7 individuals who each take on training a wild horse and then bringing it to Ft. Worth, TX to compete in the Extreme Mustang Makeover. The event consists of  a variety of classes that showcase each horse’s ability and one “freestyle” class that allows each trainer to show their own personality and unique training abilities with their horses.

So, you can probably guess that a documentary about horse training will feature a variety of training methods – some good, some bad. I did not agree with all, but I did agree with some. I’ve studied Parelli Natural Horsemanship and have had success using the Parelli methods with my horse, and there are many variations of this method that many of the trainers used. Most with great success. It was interesting to see how each trainer’s background and personality really came through and how it effected the way that they train and handle horses. Some were extremely connected to these horses by the end of the challenge and I sincerely felt for the two brothers who couldn’t afford to keep theirs in the end. In my opinion, that would be the hardest aspect of this entire challenge! I’m not sure I could do it!

Of all the trainers though, one stood out – and not in a good way. Her name is Wylene and within two seconds of her appearance on screen, she really started crawling under my skin. Her attitude was anything but humble and I thought it was interesting that they never showed her starting this mustang or any footage of her with this horse in the very beginning. I was hoping the mustang might bring her inflated ego down a few notches, but I’m not sure anything can! ugh!

But don’t let that steer you away from this film! There are so many heart-warming stories and not all of them have tragic endings! The next time you see it on your trusty Red Box screen, add it to your cart and take it home with you. It just might spark a passion for these horses in your own heart. And right now, they need all the help they can get!!

I completely agree with you about Wylene! She annoyed me too! There is a trainer in the area where I’m from, who is almost identical to her! Think they are the queen of the show but often forget to put the horses best interests first!
