Skijoring. Yes, it’s real.

The sport of Skijoring was something that slid under my radar until recently and now I’m completely intrigued! Skijoring, a sport that’s been around for a few hundred years, involves a person wearing skis being pulled by a horse, dog or motor vehicle. Equestrian skijoring was officially recognized in 1999, but I have a feeling it’s been around much longer than that. Come on, skis + horse = fun times. Or so I can assume. I have never tried this exciting sport, but I can’t say I’d turn down the opportunity! According to the North American Ski Joring Association, “Currently, the sport of equestrian ski joring has become a highly specialized competitive sport, where competitors must navigate a course of jumps, gates and sometime spear rings.”

And if those action shots weren’t enough, take a look at this mini documentary about Skijoring…

I wonder if Dancer would be up for this the next time it snows?
