This week, Hattie and I are learning all about horses! I am so excited she chose this topic and have been geeking out about it all week. We’ve decided to go through the Horse Camp curriculum and have been really enjoying it so far! If you’d like more information about it, click here for the details and then check out the button at the very bottom to purchase.

Today’s activity was designing her own horse blanket. Hattie loves all things purple, so she decided to make purple squiggles all over her blanket. Her favorite horse is Chica Linda from the Spirit series, who is a Palomino mare, so of course, this horse had to be colored exactly like her. I think she’s adorable!

The fun thing about this activity is that you could print out as many blanket pages as you want and create multiple blankets for the horse. Here are some fun ways you could modify this activity.

  • Print the horse and blanket on cardstock. Next, color and cut out the horse, leaving an extra rectangle about an inch or so all around the horse’s hooves to make a stand. Fold the ends of the rectangle around on either side to create a stand for the horse. After you’ve colored the horse’s blanket, draw two rectangular tabs on the top (where the horse’s back would be) and two on the bottom (where the horse’s belly would be). Cut around these tabs and then fold them down, over the horse in order to keep the blanket on. The idea is essentially creating a paper doll version of the horse.
  • Use colored glue, ribbon, pipe cleaners, buttons, sequins, etc… to decorate your blanket and add some extra flair!
  • Laminate both the horse page and the blanket (after you’ve cut it out) and use wall putty or double-sided tape to stick the blanket on the horse. Create multiple blankets this way and switch back and forth between them.

You can make this activity really easy by just coloring and cutting it out, or get creative and try one of the ideas above or one of your own. Ready to try one of your own? It’s included with the Horse Camp curriculum. Download it today by clicking the button below.
